GASTONIA, N.C. – A 15-year-old North Carolina girl is fighting for her life after being thrown off a horse and kicked in the head.

A family friend told the Gaston Gazette that Destiny Paige Stafford suffered a brain injury after riding her father’s horse at her aunt’s house.

It happened Saturday in Gastonia, resulting in the teenager being airlifted to Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte where she is currently on life support.

Stafford was listed in critical condition as of Sunday afternoon. The hospital intends on removing her from life support to see if she can breathe on her own.

Stafford is described as a rising 10th-grader at Stuart Cramer High School in Belmont where she’s the captain of the junior varsity cheerleading team.

Friends have created the Twitter hashtag #DestinyStrong to support her. A prayer vigil is planned at the school later today.
