SURRY COUNTY, N.C -- A local woman was beaten, kidnapped and nearly set on fire during three days of torture by her boyfriend, according to Surry County sheriff’s deputies.

Officials say 43-year-old Michael Key is charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault with a deadly weapon and other charges after abusing his girlfriend from July 2 through July 5.

Key doused the victim with lighter fluid and threw lit cigarettes at her, each day telling the woman that he would kill her, according to detectives.

Key drove the victim to different places throughout Surry County and Mt. Airy where he assaulted the victim and even tied her feet with duct tape so she couldn’t get away.

Detectives say the victim got away on July 5 after onlookers saw the suspect abusing her and stepped in to help.

Key turned himself in on the July 8.

He is being held at the Surry County Jail under a $50,000 bond.
