Confederate monument in Charlotte vandalized

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Someone scrawled the word “racist” in black paint on a Confederate monument in uptown Charlotte overnight, officials said.

The memorial sits across from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department headquarters and beside the old city hall.

The Confederate Memorial Association of Charlotte erected the monument in 1977 to honor Mecklenburg County residents who fought for the Confederacy.
