DAVIDSON COUNTY, N.C. — A search has been underway for 12 hours for an inmate who escaped from the Davidson County Jail early Monday morning.

Bobby Ray Cabe Jr., 40, who was on work detail, escaped at about 12:45 a.m. while taking the trash out to the dumpster.

Cabe was able to get out of the officer’s sight for about 15 seconds and went down a maintenance ladder attached to the wall. From there police said he ran across the roof of the new Courthouse where he jumped and fled in the direction of the Lexington City Cemetery.

Police found Cabe’s jumpsuit in the area and said he may be wearing a white T-shirt, white thermal long underwear, white socks and flip-flop jail shoes unless he has obtained other clothing. He is described as a white male, 5-feet-9-inches tall with brown eyes and long hair, a mustache/goatee and numerous tattoos.

Cabe is likely on foot.

Police said people southwest of Lexington should be on alert.

Cabe was charged in two CVS armed robberies earlier this year. He has a long criminal record dating back to 1992 including assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, arson, burglary and shoplifting.

Police said he also has a reputation for being a runner. He escaped the Davidson County Jail once before, in 1994.

There is no word on whether Cabe is armed but the sheriff said if anyone sees him they should call 911.

About 50 people currently are searching in the heat and through thick vegetation.

Cabe was moved from Forsyth County to Davidson County to stand trial charges of misdemeanor injury to real property, larceny of a firearm, and breaking and entering.  He is under a $350,000 bond in Forsyth for numerous charges.
