As Guilford and Alamance counties’ animal controls work to locate a fox involved in a vicious attack, neighbors are concerned for the safety of people and animals.

Sheriff’s reports show Monday just after 11 a.m. is when 83-year-old Nell Murray was bitten by a fox along Alamance County Line Road.

Son Phillip Murray told FOX8 the attack was more than a bite.

“Doctor’s found a tooth in her right shin bone, I saw it myself,” Murray said.

Nell Murray was airlifted to UNC Hospitals and is in stable condition. Tuesday she had surgery, stitches in her hand and may require skin grafts.

Neighbor Cindy Edwards came outside with her grandson when they heard the sound of a helicopter nearby. Edwards said she’s glad her pit bull Wyatt was also outside to protect her family.

“My grandson was riding his little tractor and all of a sudden my dog takes off for my car and I look and I see that it's something over there and I called him back and fox come running and attacked him,” Edwards said.

Edwards said her dog Wyatt was given a rabies and booster shot for precaution.

Edwards and Murray live next door to each other but live in separate counties. Alamance County Animal Control is leading the investigation since the bite took place in Alamance County. Guilford County Animal control has also placed a fox trap outside Edwards’ home. Neither animal control departments have located the fox but said they check the traps daily.

Edwards said she is concerned for other neighbors, animals and family members.

“It could be out there I mean there's a barn in the woods,” Edwards said.
