PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. -- A day of celebration quickly turned tragic for the family of a Virginia high school student.

Sierra Wise, 18, of Prince George County was killed Saturday morning on her way to graduation at Prince George County High School, according to WTVR.

The wreck happened when Wise's pickup truck veered off the road and hit a tree around 7:30 a.m.

“This is a day graduates won’t forget,” Donita Gibbs, a mother of a Prince George High School student, told WTVR. “Having someone pass on a day like today is like someone passing on your birthday — it’s a hurting thing. I’m so sorry for that family. I don’t know the child, but I am a mother.”

Classmates took to Twitter to express their sadness after walking across the football field to receive their diplomas at 9 a.m. that same morning.

“We don’t know when our day will come, but my heart goes out to the family because that child had her whole life ahead of her,” Maria Evans told WTVR.

A crash team is still trying to determine what caused the fatal crash.
