Three schools in North Carolina are on a list of the 10 colleges that are the biggest wastes of money.

TheFiscalTimes.com recently published the unflattering list, which included Elizabeth City State University in Elizabeth City, Shaw University in Raleigh and Fayetteville State University.

The career site Payscale crunched numbers to find the data. They calculated the future earnings of graduates over 20 years as they compare with the median pay for a high school graduate, taking out the cost of tuition, according to TheFiscalTimes.com.

The schools with the best return on investment were Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California and California Institute of Technology.

Despite this list, North Carolina has several other schools that routinely rank high on other lists for their excellence. Those schools include UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, N.C. State, Wake Forest and others.
