CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — A North Carolina woman claims a scammer pretending to be a soldier cheated her out of nearly $19,000.
WTVD reported that Melinda Flowers claims to have met a man on a dating website who said he was a soldier in Afghanistan.
She said the man sent her a check for $18,900 and asked her to forward the money to his lawyer. Flowers said she then deposited the money into her account.
Flowers said the bank told her the check was good. She said she then did what the man asked and wired money to his two lawyers. But something unexpected happened shortly later.
Flowers said a few days later, she got a call that the money was not there after all. And now she owes $18,900.
Flowers said she then had to take out a loan to pay all of the money back. SunTrust closed her account. The bank said since the check was deposited in her account Flowers is responsible.
WTVD did a Google search of the man Flowers met and found the same pictures he sent to her were also reportedly used on numerous scams involving dating sites.
