FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – A man charged in the death of his fiancee’s daughter has been returned to North Carolina from Colorado, where he was arrested last month.

The Associated Press reported that 22-year-old Vanessa Ariana Sanchez and her fiance, 21-year-old Andrew Tyler Tomczak, were arrested in Colorado in May, where they’d been living since the spring.

Tomczak was taken to the Wake County Jail on Thursday, while Sanchez is still jailed in Colorado Springs, according to reports.

The suspects face charges of first-degree murder and felony child abuse. Their 18-month-old daughter, Violet Cortez, died of a head injury in January due to multiple blunt force impacts, according to officials.

Police believe the suspects beat the girl and then called 911, claiming they’d found her unresponsive at their apartment.
