GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. -- Veterans in the Piedmont will soon have access to discounts at nearly 200 shops, stores and restaurants.

The "Thank a Vet" discount card program officially kicks off after Memorial Day, but veterans can apply for the card now.

Guilford County Register of Deeds Jeff Thigpen developed the program, and he and his team have gotten commitments from more than 170 businesses.

They include discounts and deals for haircuts, food, oil changes, auto repair, lawyers, and banks.

"We want the veterans to come in and file their military discharge paperwork, but we also then connect them with businesses in the community that can provide them with a discount," Thigpen explained.

To get an ID card, veterans can bring a valid drivers license or military ID along with their military discharge paperwork to the Register of Deeds office in High Point or Greensboro.

It is open to veterans from any county, Thigpen said, to use at participating Guilford County businesses.

He's also working with other counties in the area interested in starting similar programs.
