Just a little bit of heaven from Chad Tucker‘s mom. He shared his mom’s Skillet Apple Pie recipe today on the FOX8 4:00 News (see newscast video below).

Momma Sue’s Skillet Apple Pie

2 pounds Granny Smith Apples
2 pounds Braeburn Apples
1-2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
3/4 cup granulated sugar
1 stick of butter
1 cup of light brown sugar
1 pkg of refrigerated piecrusts (14.1-oz)
1 egg white
2 tablespoons of sugar
Ice Cream of your choice, (Momma likes Butter-pecan, Chad likes Vanilla)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Peel all the apples and cut into thick wedges.
Mix apples with cinnamon and 3/4 cup of sugar

Melt 1 stick of butter in a 10-inch cast-iron skillet. Add brown sugar over medium heat until the sugar melts into a glaze. Place 1 pie crust over the glaze in the bottom of the skillet.
Pour in your apples. The apples will pile up but don’t worry they will all cook down.
Place another pie crust on top of the apples.
Whisk 1 egg white and brush on top of the pie crust Cut several slits on top to allow the steam out.
Sprinkle sugar on top and bake at 350 for 1 hour and 10 minutes or until golden brown and bubble.
During the last 10 minutes you may want to add aluminum foil to keep the pie from getting too brown.
If you prefer you can add a caramel glaze Let the pie cool for about 30 minutes and serve with your favorite ice cream.

Take about 25 minutes to prepare and 1 hour and 10 minutes to cook.
