2 in custody following assault, police chase in Winston-Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two people are in custody following an assault and police chase in Winston-Salem on Thursday evening.

Walter Andre Lowery, 53, of Winston-Salem, is charged with second-degree kidnapping, assault on a female, assault by strangulation and felonious speeding to elude law enforcement officers.

Kayla Marie Dudley, 24, of Walnut Cove, was served with an outstanding warrant for arrest for obtaining property by false pretense.

Police said the chase involving an orange SUV ended near the Northwest Boulevard exit on U.S. 52.

The chase started on in the 300 block of Akron Drive after a call came in at 4:52 p.m. about Lowery assaulting and holding Dudley against her will.

When officers arrived on the scene they saw an orange-colored Ford sport utility vehicle fleeing the area.

Officers tried to pull the vehicle over, but Lowery would not stop.

The chase ended on U.S. 52 southbound near the Martin Luther King Jr. Drive exit.

Lowrey ran from the vehicle and was eventually taken into custody.

Lowery was placed under a $100,000 secured bond. Dudley was placed under a $2,000 secured bond.
