MARTINEZ, Calif. — A teen accused of fatally stabbing his friend’s 9-year-old brother said he did it because he “wanted to see what it was like.”

In an exclusive jailhouse interview with the Contra Costa Times, William Shultz said he regretted killing Jordan Almgren but said “there’s a reason for everything that happens.”

Shultz, 18, of Discovery Bay, Calif., was arrested on Sunday hours after he reportedly stabbed the boy while the boy slept. He has been charged with murder.

He said he wanted to learn what it was like to kill a human being before the coming end of the world.

“I wanted to see what it was like to take a life before someone tried to take mine,” Shultztold the Contra Costa Times.

The day before the stabbing, Shultz was briefly hospitalized for a mental health evaluation.

Prosecutors said Tuesday they will not seek the death penalty because of Shultz’s age and lack of a criminal past.
