Student shot at small, private university in NC; suspect sought

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A student at a small private university in Charlotte was shot and injured early Sunday morning on campus, according to school officials.

The shooting happened at Johnson C. Smith University at about 2:15 a.m. as a student sitting in his car was struck by a round, according to the school.

The school said in a statement posted online that the student was not targeted and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Multiple news agencies are reporting that police are looking for the suspect. A motive in the crime has not been report.

Johnson C. Smith is a historically black, liberal arts university with about 1,600 students.
