MOUNT AIRY, N.C. -- A 15-year-old skateboarder is in “very critical” condition after an accident Sunday afternoon.

The accident happened at Renfro and Oak streets at about 1:15 p.m., according to the Mount Airy Police Department.

Officers said it appears the skateboarder, who family identified as Hassan Moore, rolled through a stoplight and ran into a pickup.

Surry County EMS treated the teen on the scene but Moore was quickly airlifted to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

“Everything stops. Your heart stop, everything stops,” said Hassan’s mother, Donna Leake, of the moment she learned of the accident. “It’s like your whole world has just come down.”

Leake said, when she first spoke to the doctors treating Hassan, they told her his heart had stopped.

“They told me that he’d flat-lined, and then they brought him back, because his lung -- both of his lungs -- collapsed,” she said. “They got tubes in his chest, they got tubes down his mouth, his face is all broken up.”

Leake said Hassan is still unable to breathe on his own and is unresponsive.

The accident is still under investigation and no charges have been filed.
