HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — A mother accused of abandoning her newborn baby in a dumpster at a Myrtle Beach-area apartment complex has turned herself in to police.
WMBF reported that 23-year-old Shelby Harper Taylor has been charged with one count of attempted murder. She was granted a $10,000 bond and told she can’t have contact with children unless DSS approves.
Three family members discovered the baby girl on Thursday afternoon in Horry County.
Austin Detray said he was taking out the trash with his brother, Raymond, when he heard a faint noise coming from inside the dumpster.
He said he jumped in the dumpster when he knew it was a baby.
The baby was reportedly in a plastic bag with an umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.
“It still had mucus in its system, and it was still puking up stuff,” Austin Detray said. “Still had the umbilical cord attached to it, and we just stayed by its side and waited for the ambulance to come.”
Austin Detray’s brother Raymond and sister Jessica were also there when the baby was found.
“There was blood everywhere… in the trash can and on the baby. I was scared for its life,” said Raymond Price.
Jessica Detray said she hopes the baby will live and have a wonderful life.
“There’s other options — adoptions, drop her off at the hospital, knock at a door, go to a police station,” she said. “Do something. Don’t just leave her to, you know, die. I mean, she’s a living soul.”
Hospital officials said the baby may have been born just hours before being found. She was apparently covered in blood and afterbirth. At last check, the baby remains in the hospital and is stable.
