Fire reported at Wheatmore High School; students evacuated, no injuries

RANDOLPH COUNTY, N.C. – Students and teachers at Wheatmore High School had to be evacuated after a fire was reported at the school on Thursday afternoon.

Randolph County officials said the fire was reported at about 3 p.m. by somebody at the school at 3678 Finch Farm Road.

It started in the gym locker room, away from the classrooms, according to officials. Guil-Rand firefighters quickly had the situation under control. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters on the scene found uniforms in the locker room on fire. The school district said there was only minimal smoke damage.

The incident remains under investigation. Authorities have not released a cause of the fire.

Teachers and students at the school were there for a snow makeup day. School will be open tomorrow for another makeup day.
