CHARLOTTE, N.C. —Two people accused of severely beating a 3-year-old boy both pleaded not guilty to the crimes Monday morning in court.

Cory McCree and Shamika Reaves made a brief appearance in court. They both pleaded not guilty to the charges, which included felony child abuse.

The charges stem from the alleged abuse inside a motel off of Freedom Drive last May. Police said the 3-year-old boy had been severely beaten and sexually assaulted in the motel room.

McCree was facing assault and sexual assault charges, and he turned down a plea offer that would have had him spent 24 years in prison.
