Man accused in 2002 Greensboro homicide arrives in Guilford County

GREENSBORO, N.C. — A man accused of first-degree murder in a 2002 homicide arrived in Guilford County Wednesday.

U.S. marshals arrested Stanley Frederick Westphal, 49, of Springfield, Ill., at his home on Feb. 3.

Westphal faces the murder charge in the death of Anthony Demetrius Coates. Coates, 44, was killed Dec. 21, 2002, in a room at the Lodge America hotel on Lanada Road off West Wendover Avenue in Greensboro.

Police recently connected Westphal to Coates’ homicide after reanalyzing fingerprints and other evidence from the crime scene.
