At least 1 dead, 3 injured in Texas bridge collapse

SALADO, Texas — Emergency crews are on the scene of a major bridge collapse on I-35 near Salado.

According to TxDOT, I-35 is closed in both directions north of Salado until further notice.

Engineers are on the scene providing preliminary reports. They believe an oversize truck hit a bridge under construction at FM 2484 and I-35. The impact caused several beams to fall on several vehicles.

Temple Fire Marshall J. Christian say at 11:17 a.m., Salado VFD responded to a bridge beam in the road that had been struck by a semi. Responding firefighters found the 18-wheeler on fire and put out the flames.

At least one person has been confirmed dead and three others were taken to Scott and White Hospital with injuries. One victim was flown and the others were taken by ambulance. Their conditions are unknown.

Officials say three semis and two pickups were involved in the accident.

Northbound traffic will be detoured at FM 2268 then take SH 95 in Holland to Loop 363 to I-35 in Temple. southbound traffic will be detoured at Loop 363 N to SH 95 and then back to I-35 on FM 2268, said the Bell County Sheriff’s Department.

Law enforcement is assisting.
