RODANTHE, N.C. — A leatherback sea turtle weighing more than 700 pounds has been found on the beaches of North Carolina.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore posted to Facebook that the turtle weighed 706 pounds and had to be euthanized.

The turtle has since been transferred to the Center for Marine Sciences and Technology in Morehead City for a thorough necropsy.

The turtle was lethargic and buried in sand when it was found, according to biologists. Officials were unable to allow the turtle to live in captivity because of the size.
