WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Two children were ejected from a pickup truck on U.S. 52 in Winston-Salem Monday afternoon.

The wreck happened at about 12:20 p.m. between Rams Drive and Business 40.

Police say the pickup was driven by a juvenile identified as Jonne Joel Leonides. With Leonides in the vehicle were Manuela Leonides, 47, Griselda Arrieta, 21, a 2-year-old female, 4-year-old female and 4-year-old male.

Leonides was merging onto U.S. 52 northbound from Rams Drive. Police say Leonides failed to ensure it was safe to merge and collided with a tractor-trailer. This caused the pickup to exit the road to the right and overturn.

During the wreck, the 2-year-old female and 4-year-old male were ejected from the vehicle.

All six occupants were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

The children's injuries are reported to be serious but not life threatening.

Leonides is charged with driving with no operator's license, unsafe lane change and two seat belt violations for the juveniles.

The investigation is ongoing.
