DURHAM, N.C. — Online dating is supposed to be a way to find special someone. But for one North Carolina widow, it left her heart broken and her wallet empty.
“My husband passed away a couple of years ago and at the encouragement of friends, they suggested I go on it and meet someone,” she said.
But it ended badly. She asked WTVD to protect her identity as she was too embarrassed to be identified, but wanted to share her story as a warning.
She joined a dating website for singles 50 and older. She soon started chatting with a man who called himself “Glen Bogan.” Soon the chats turned into a relationship. Text messages and phone calls started to come daily.
They eventually made plans to meet, but Bogan cancelled at the last minute. He then sent an urgent text saying he was in the Ukraine on business and needed her help.
