ELON, N.C. — Elon University has suspended new-member activity at its Kappa Sigma fraternity chapter after 17 new members were cited for trespassing in a cemetery in Virginia.

A spokesperson for the school said the fraternity members were caught trespassing in a cemetery where the fraternity’s founder is buried.

The university said the students were there to pay respects and that there was no property damage to the cemetery. The fraternity itself is not suspended.

Elon announced in February an investigation into reports of hazing by Pi Kappa Phi fraternity in its new member education program. The fraternity’s operations and activities were suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
