ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. — Authorities are investigating after a duck was found apparently beaten and stabbed to death with a pencil in the eastern part of the state.

WCTI reported that the dead animal was found Friday in Onslow County. The Tails of Possumwood Acres Wildlife Sanctuary in Hubert recently uploaded images of the duck to its Facebook page.

The group said on Facebook that the duck was used to people feeding it. They had gotten a call about the duck late last week.

“I was just horrified, I just couldn’t believe someone could be that cruel and do that deliberately to a living creature. It just made me sick,” said Toni O’Neil, founder of the sanctuary.

Animal cruelty is a felony crime in North Carolina. Anyone who witnesses animal abuse is encouraged to report it.
