BURLINGTON, N.C. — For years Burlington has been the biggest city in North Carolina with no public transit system of its own.

Now that’s a title the city no longer holds.

Tuesday, the Burlington City Council voted unanimously on a funding mechanism for a public bus line.

Each Burlington resident will be taxed $5 per year for each car he or she owns.

The tax will be effective July 1.
