Man flees from police, hides under mattress

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. — A high-speed police chase wound through Independence and Kansas City, and the suspect driver hit at least one innocent motorist before being taken into custody.

Independence police began to pursue the vehicle about 3:30 p.m. Monday. The light-colored Cadillac was reported stolen in the northwest part of Independence.

Independence police were joined by Kansas City officers. The man drove from Independence into Kansas City where he hit an innocent motorist near 31st Street and Jackson Avenue. The man even drove recklessly on Interstate 70 at one point.

After ditching the vehicle about 3:45 p.m. Monday, the man ran behind some houses before hiding underneath a mattress as a police helicopter and Chopper5 were overhead. Police eventually found the man about 3:50 and pulled him from underneath the mattress. He was arrested near Highway 40 and 47th Street in Independence.
