CASWELL COUNTY, N.C. -- One Caswell County middle school student loves giving back and doing so has gotten her some national attention.
Whether it's in the classroom or in the community, Diana Berdine is there to lend a hand.
"I usually go out to nursing homes and talk with them, play games with them and help them out a little bit," Berdine said.
The 7th grader lives in Leasburg and goes to N.L. Dillard Middle in Yanceyville. She's involved with Ruritan, one of the country's largest service organizations.
"It's really fun to go out there," Berdine said.
She's logged more than 500 community service hours and earned the honor of being named "2014 Ruritan National Rudy of the Year."
Rudys are the young Ruritan members.
Berdine's ability to care for others combined with her academic success makes her standout among her peers.
She said you don't need riches to make a difference.
"You don't need a million dollars," Berdine said, "what you need is just your feet and your hands and get out there."
