Here is the latest from FOX8’s Emily Byrd.

Snow will arrive after lunchtime, and local roads (especially untreated roads) will deteriorate rapidly.  Temperatures are not going to get above freezing until tomorrow afternoon.

Precipitation is moving toward North Carolina, from west to east, and there are several hazards that will come with this storm.  North of Highway 64, it will be snow today, changing to snow/sleet overnight.  South of Highway 64, precipitation will start as snow, then transition to sleet and freezing rain overnight.

This offers two distinct problems, depending on where you are in the Piedmont.  Snow and sleet accumulations for the northern half of the Piedmont (including the Triad) that could be 4″ to 7″ total.  Icy conditions that could result in scattered power outages in the southern Piedmont.  It’s going to be a mess.

Quick update from FOX8 Chief Meteorologist Van Denton:

“Winter Storm gets underway later today. Starting early this afternoon in the mountains and reaching the Triad, mainly after 4pm. Due to the warm air aloft, I talked about last night, we should start as snow all areas and then transition to sleet then freezing rain from south to north. The north will have the longest period of snow and, therefore, the highest totals. The south will go to freezing rain sooner and get more of that. 1/4″ or more freezing rain can cause power problems. Areas south of the Triad fall into a zone with 1/4″ to less than 1/2” and may experience power issues overnight and tomorrow. Soil temperatures are 33-36 (N to S) across the area so snow and sleet will build up on roadways easily. Usually when we get snow/sleet our soil temps are near 40.

Please tune in at 4, 5 and 6 pm for my detailed reports.

NCDOT offers the following safety tips for driving in winter weather:
• Clear windows and mirrors of ice before driving;
• Reduce speed and leave plenty of room between you and other vehicles in case either vehicle goes into a skid;
• Plan for significant additional travel time to reach your destination;
• Approach bridges and overpasses with extreme caution and do not apply your brakes while on a bridge or ramp unless necessary;
• If you begin to slide, take your foot off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the direction of the slide. Do not apply the brakes as that will cause further loss of control of the car;
• Come to a complete stop or yield the right of way when approaching an intersection in case any vehicles coming from other directions lose control of their vehicles while also trying to stop; and
• If you have a cell phone, take it with you. You can contact the Highway Patrol statewide by calling *HP (*47) or call law enforcement by dialing 911. But please don’t call 911 to check on road conditions. That line is for emergencies only.

With the potential winter storm, the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas (CBCC) is calling on all eligible donors throughout the region to donate blood immediately before the inclement weather starts.

“Despite the fact that there is no snow or ice yet, this potential winter storm is already seriously impacting donations,” said Martin Grable, president and CEO of the Community Blood Center of the Carolinas. “We have had many mobile drives cancel as schools and business close, and we may see more as the weather worsens.”

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is asking all healthy donors to donate blood today at one of its donation centers in Charlotte, Gastonia, Greensboro or Hickory or at a mobile drive. The Charlotte, Gastonia and Hickory centers are open until 8:00PM today; Greensboro center is open 1:00-6:00PM. Weather permitting, all five CBCC donation centers (Charlotte, Concord, Gastonia, Greensboro and Hickory) will be open on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

 Appointments for today can be made by calling 336-938-0269.

Governor Pat McCrory is urging people to stay off the roads tonight as the winter storm moves east across North Carolina. Forecasters have increased predicted snow and ice accumulation totals in many areas potentially making roads impassable in a portion of the central part of state.

“We are very fortunate so far that many drivers heeded our warnings and got off the roads early, but we are nowhere near out of the woods yet,” said Governor McCrory. “The prediction totals are increasing for many areas and that could very well continue to change as the storm progresses so please stay off the roads if you possibly can until conditions improve.”

The following is an update regarding the City of Greensboro’s response to tonight’s winter storm:

“Greensboro’s field operations crews continue to work around the clock to treat the roadways affected by tonight’s storm (crews began salting at 4 pm). The second shift just started at 9 pm and will continue salting and scraping until 9 am tomorrow. At this point, estimates are that we have 1-2 inches of snow on the roads with a layer of sleet on top.

Unfortunately, while the volume of precipitation has not been high, the impact is significant and we expect roadways to be extremely dangerous in the morning. Thus far, we have seen 73 accidents within city limits since 3 pm.”
