HENDERSON, N.C. — A family is still haunted after a North Carolina mother was murdered more than 35 years ago. The case remains a mystery.

WRAL reported that the body of Alice Burgess was found in the trunk of her car in 1977. She vanished after leaving to meet a friend at a local bar.

Authorities said they believe she was beaten to death with the tire jack from her car. The car was found about a week after she went missing.

An investigator said he believes she had a sexual encounter with someone at the scene and was killed shortly later.

“It was a particularly gruesome murder,” said former investigator Joe Momier. “She had a number of wounds that went down even through the skull. I mean, you could tell that (she was) brutally beaten to death.”

Authorities reportedly made an arrest in the case, but the person was acquitted at trial, according to WRAL.

The victim shared a home with her three young children. Michael Burgess was her son. He said he is still haunted by the case after all these years.
