WILMINGTON, N.C. — Two men were killed and a woman was injured in a shooting Friday afternoon near the Walmart in Monkey Junction, according to the sheriff’s office.

Officials say the shooter is one of the deceased men and are classifying the incident as a “murder-suicide.”

The female victim was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

One witness said she was inside the Walmart when she heard a “popping” sound.

“I was actually in the parking lot getting ready to get into Walmart,” Tracy Osterhaut said. “I heard a noise that sounded like snapping. I joked around and thought it was gun fire. I started walking in and saw all the cop cars. I went over there and someone said a guy had shot a man and a woman and shot himself.”

Sheriff Ed McMahon said officials believe this shooting was a targeted attack, but could not disclose many details.

“We are just beginning to start the investigation,” McMahon said. “As soon as I have information, I will come back and give as much as I can.”

Law enforcement officials are still on scene investigating the incident.

“There is stuff that happens a lot in Wilmington, such as shootings and murders, I know that,” said bystander Cayne Benicasa. “But it’s never been here. You’ve heard of people getting robbed held at gunpoint in Walmart, but I’ve never been there to see everything happen.”
