Store employee accidentally shoots, injures self in Burlington

BURLINGTON, N.C. – A man accidentally shot himself with his gun at a sporting goods store in Burlington on Sunday afternoon, according to police.

Police said an employee at Dunham’s Sports at 309 Huffman Mill Road accidentally shot himself with his handgun at about 2:30 p.m.

The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the upper left leg and was taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center and later airlifted to Duke, according to police.

Burlington police, fire and Alamance County emergency workers responded to the scene. Police said people at the store had initially provided first aid to the victim.

The gun in question was a handgun that belonged to the employee, according to police. He had a concealed carry permit.

The victim has been identified as Bruce R. Foote, 43, of Mebane. Police said Sunday evening that he was in surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham. His condition has not been released.
