McLEANSVILLE, N.C. — The gift of a pair of shoes put a national spotlight on Northeast High students Yaovi Amaglo and Jared Newby. It also spurred a chain reaction of

Amaglo got national attention late last year after buying a pair of Air Jordans for a fellow student who was teased for wearing worn-down sneakers.

Now, the Greensboro News & Record reported that Amaglo, a senior, has gotten calls from leaders of companies like Nike and Champs Sports.

He has been invited to play soccer with a college team in Iowa and might get offered a college scholarship.

The two teens were interviewed and photographed for a Woman’s World magazine article expected to publish in the spring.

They have received high-end sneakers. But neither sought the attention or gifts. Amaglo said the point is the importance of giving back. That doesn’t have to involve material gifts, he said.

“It can be words. It can be encouragement,” Amaglo said, according to the paper. “It can be just being there when somebody needs you.”
