FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina couple was charged in what was called a “horrific case of animal cruelty.”

According to WNCN, Fort Bragg soldier John Garrett Burrow, 22, and his wife, Kelsey Caroline Burrow, 20, were arrested on Thursday after authorities said they intentionally drowned their puppy.

John Burrow allegedly tied the puppy’s feet together using a parachute cord and then tied its feet to its nose before throwing it in a pond.

The puppy had run away from home on multiple occasions and had been injured. The couple said they could not afford the vet bills.

On Jan. 2, the puppy washed up on McFayden Pond’s shore and John Burrow was charged with felony cruelty to animals.

Kelsey Burrow is charged with misdemeanor accessory after the fact.
