Former firefighter, son save woman and baby from burning home

DALLAS, N.C. — A mother and her 2-month-old son escaped from a burning home Thursday thanks to the quick actions of two neighbors.

Joseph Lay said he and his father, who is a former firefighter, were returning home from work when they noticed heavy smoke coming from the home on North Street in Dallas.

“I said, ‘Oh, Lord the house is on fire,’” Lay said. “My father and I kicked in the door in and I could see the flames in the kitchen.”

April Carver said that sound was enough to wake the young mother who had fallen asleep.
