WENTWORTH, N.C. — Rockingham County authorities said one person has died after a mobile home fire Saturday night outside of Wentworth.

Dwayne Kelly Vernon, 54, died from injuries in the fire, which was reported shortly before 8:45 p.m. at 362 Maggy Valley Road, according to officials.

Firefighters said flames and smoke were pouring out of the roof of the structure when they arrived. Firefighters were on the scene late Saturday night.

Investigators said the fire appears to be accidental caused by smoking materials initially igniting a recliner in the living room.

The home had smoke detectors, but they did not appear to be in working order, according to authorities.
