Duke students, Muslims join together to show solidarity at chapel

DURHAM, N.C. — Hundreds of supporters joined Duke University’s Muslim community Friday in a show of solidarity outside Duke Chapel.

WTVD reported that it came after the private school announced then canceled a plan to broadcast a call to prayer from the bell tower.

Duke administrators would not elaborate Friday on who was part of the initial decision-making process to allow a Muslim call to prayer from the top of the chapel.

School officials said they wish they had taken more time and opened it up to more discussion. They also said they felt a need to step back in light of serious and credible security concerns.
