Burlington teen charged with sex offense with a child

BURLINGTON, N.C. — A teen is in custody accused of a sex offense with a child.

On Jan. 5, Burlington police received a report from the Department of Social Services regarding an inappropriate relationship between a 17-year-old male and a 12-year-old female.

Following an investigation, police arrested Walter Gellweiler, 17, of Burlington.

Gellweiler is charged with one count of statutory rape and one count of first-degree sex offense with a child.

Police say Gellweiler was cooperative during the investigation and surrendered himself to authorities on Jan. 9. He was placed under a $100,000 unsecured bond.
