ASHEVILLE, N.C. — A simple swab could eventually help save a North Carolina boy fighting cancer.

WLOS reported that 3-year-old Xander has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. A drive began earlier this week in hopes of finding a match.

He was diagnosed with the disease months after his first birthday. Intake nurse Francine Weinhagen stresses there are no needles in the screening process.

“Nobody has to get stuck to be registered on the donor list,” Weinhagen said. “You swab your own cheeks and we seal that up and send it in and you will become registered.”
