Rockingham commissioners will not ask Mabe to resign

WENTWORTH, N.C. — On Monday night, the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners were expected to ask Keith Mabe to resign as chairman after being arrested for drunken driving last month. Some had even hoped they would ask him to resign as commissioner.

But neither happened, much to the surprise and disappointment of some in attendance.

It was the first time the board met since Mabe was charged with driving while intoxicated on Dec. 13, a scandal that has rippled throughout the county.

Mabe, who was going home that Saturday afternoon after attending an event in Reidsville, had a blood-alcohol content of 0.19, more than twice the state’s legal limit of 0.08.
