ASHEVILLE, N.C. — About two dozen people gathered Monday evening for a vigil to remember a 3-year-old boy killed allegedly by his mother and her boyfriend.

Gabe McArdle died just hours after his birthday from blunt force trauma, according to the Newberry County Coroner Craig Newton. Gabe’s mother, Theia McArdle and Richard Bowman were arrested in Newberry, South Carolina and charged with homicide by child abuse.

Newton said he believes Gabe was beaten by hand. In a court appearance last week, McArdle said the allegations were false.

Newton said a full body scan revealed Gabe suffered previous injuries. In June, 2013 Asheville Police arrested McArdle for child abuse. The warrant says she hit a child in the face. Court documents show the Department of Social Services was involved. News 13 filed an Open Records request for more information on their involvement and are waiting for them to respond.
