Off-duty police officer mistakenly shoots himself in elevator

CINCINNATI – An off-duty police officer out to dinner with his wife accidentally shot himself in the stomach in an elevator.

WCPO reported that Officer Darryl Jouett of the Erlanger, Kentucky, Police Department was trying to adjust his service weapon in his holster when it discharged.

It happened as he was heading back to his car while out to dinner in Cincinnati on Saturday.

The bullet struck him in the stomach after ricocheted off the elevator walls, according to WCPO. He was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries.

Jouett has been with the police department for more than 25 years.

“It’s very unusual to see somebody discharge a firearm, accidentally, in a confined space like that. It’s very unusual,” said Capt. Mike John, District 1 Commander for the Cincinnati Police Department.
