SPENCER, N.C. — Crews responded to a 5-alarm fire Tuesday night at the Dunbar Center on South Long Street in East Spencer, officials said.

Spencer Fire Department officials said the fire is at the vacant “old junior high school building.”

The fire marshal said 75 firefighters responded to the fire at the building that has been a staple in the community for 50 years.

It was first a school then a community center before it became a vacant building.
