MADISON, N.C. — A man is in custody following a six-hour standoff inside a home in Madison.

Police were initially called regarding a person in a roadway doing property damage. Police say they have had dealings with the suspect in the past.

The man barricaded himself in his mother’s house with her inside. She was not considered a hostage.

After the man continued to refuse to exit the home, police and deputies with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office made entry into the home and were able to get the mother out.

The man then fled to the attic, where police were forced to use a flash bang and tear gas to get him out.

The man will be taken for a medical evaluation.

Police say he did not have a weapon on him.
