Gibsonville woman arrested for stealing items out of shopping carts

BURLINGTON, N.C. — Police have arrested a woman accused of stealing unattended items from people’s shopping carts at retail establishments.

Tawana Ann Summers, 41, of Gibsonville, is charged with larceny and resisting/delaying/obstructing an officer by attempting to flee and giving a false name.

Over the past several weeks,Ā Burlington police took several reports regarding larcenies of items from shopping carts while people were shopping.

On Dec. 15, 18 and 19, the Burlington Police Department conducted multiple covert operations at different retail establishments in the city. As a result of these operations, Summers was identified as the suspect and was arrested.

Summers was transported to the Alamance County Jail where she was held under a $1,000 secured bond.

During the operations, police rewarded three people with gift cards for turning in unattended property they located at the store.
