Update: Homicide victim in Browns Summit found by nephew

Update — 10:04 a.m. The Browns Summit homicide victim was found by a nephew, Col. Randy Powers told the News and Record.

“He couldn’t get (Huerta-Morales) to the door and saw him on the floor inside,” Powers said.

Huerta-Morales raised chickens and rabbits and his nephew sometimes came over to help him feed them, Powers said.

Investigators are re-canvassing the neighborhood this morning, Powers said.

Update — 9:35 p.m. Guilford County officials have identified the victim as Jose Merced Huerta-Morales, 36.

BROWNS SUMMIT, N.C. – Guilford County officials said a man was found dead inside a home in Browns Summit on Sunday and investigators believe he died of a gunshot wound.

Authorities said they were called to 7301 Friendship Church Road at about 3:30 p.m. by a relative of the suspected homeowner. The identity of the victim has not been released.

CSI was on the scene Sunday night. Colonel Randy Powers with the Guilford County Sheriff Department said they are treating this as a homicide investigation.

Medical examiner Timothy McNeal is assisting deputies to determine how long the victim has been inside the home.

“The medical examiner’s office will try and help us determine the time of death as well as our CSI who have been trained for that,” said Colonel Randy Powers with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.
