HENRICO COUNTY, Va. -- Police and firefighters made sure a three-year-old boy had a Merry Christmas after an already traumatic childhood.

In June 2012, Tommy Oppermann and his mother, Reina, were thrown from a car during a wreck. Tommy survived, but his mother did not.

For the following two years Tommy lived with his father, Erik Oppermann, a volunteer firefighter. Earlier in December, Erik died from a heart attack.

Police and firefighters were able to pool $15,000 to ensure Tommy had a memorable Christmas with his aunt and guardian, Gretchen Miller.
