GREENSBORO, N.C. — Courtenay Burton walked into the front door of the sanctuary of historic First Presbyterian Church and looked around in awe.

“It looks fresher, but it’s familiar,” Burton told the News & Record after getting an early view with her women’s Bible study group. The women were passing out home-baked cookies to the construction workers and had ventured in.

“They took the effort to keep what was so special,” Burton said.

The church’s sanctuary will reopen Sunday — in time for Christmas services — after a $15 million campus renovation that took about two years.
