WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Two people were shot in the parking lot of a Winston-Salem shopping plaza Monday afternoon.

Officers responded to a parking lot at 1539 Hanes Mall Blvd. at 3:32 p.m. and found Chavez Laquan Vargas, 23, and Quentin Delonte Thorpe, 25, suffering from gunshot wounds.

Vargas was shot at least once and his condition was critical but his injuries did not appear to be life threatening. Thorpe was shot multiple times but he only sustained minor injuries.

Both men were taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Witnesses described seeing a gold colored Ford Focus leave the immediate area rapidly following the incident.

Police say evidence indicates this was likely an illegal drug transaction and robbery attempt. They added that the incident was not random and that the parties involved are all connected and known to each other.

An investigation is ongoing.
