Elderly Winston-Salem man hurt in car wreck

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A 91-year-old Winston-Salem man was critically injured after police said he suffered a “medical distress situation” and crossed the center line, crashing with another vehicle.

Howard Kenneth Smith, Sr., was injured in the crash, which was reported at about 10 a.m. Tuesday in the 400 block of North Stratford Road, according to Winston-Salem police.

Police said the victim was driving a 2012 Lexus south on Stratford Road when he suffered a medical distress situation and crossed the line.

The victim collided with a 1998 Honda SUV driven by a 65-year-old Winston-Salem woman, according to police. She was not injured.

The victim was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center with critical injuries, according to police.
